Because shells are natural creatures, it can be very difficult to maintain its organic state. Shells are also very fragile. But owner and designer Jennifer Binney is able to pull it off. Jewelry 101- Sparkling Like New

Often times I am asked, “Why is my jewelry looking so dull?” and “What’s the best way to keep my Hinu jewelry sparkling and looking like new?”

Your jewelry will get dirty from being worn everyday; it’s the combination of your natural skin oil and products that you use. Tarnishing will also occur depending on the weather conditions of where you live. Here in Hawaii we are constantly exposed to salt air, which will corrode almost anything, and must be diligent in taking care of our precious belongings!

The answer to keeping your jewels bright and shiny is quite easy- every night BEFORE you do your nightly beauty routine take your necklace/earrings/ring off and wash it with warm water and a mild soap. The reason you have to clean your jewelry before you start your nightly routine is that many skin care products contain chemicals that will cause your necklace to tarnish or stain. Our favorite soap is Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Liquid Hand Soap. You can purchase Mrs. Meyer’s Hand Soap directly from the Mrs. Meyer’s website: www.mrsmeyers.com

It’s best to put the soap directly onto the jewelry, get a soft clean cloth wet and rub the jewelry clean. NEVER use a bristly brush as that could possibly scratch your jewelry, especially if it is silver. Silver is much softer then gold and will scratch, bend or break much more easily then gold.

Who you callin’ a Cowrie…????

The lustrous patterns and exotically colored cowrie shells have enticed people for a very long time. In ancient Hawaii, the Leho (Tiger Cowrie Shell) was used to catch He’e (Octopus). Modern day Africa uses the cowrie for currency. Here at Hinu we use these seashell treasures to create beautiful pieces of jewelry.

Cowries are more than just their shell; they are actually sea snails, complete with head, eyes, tentacles, a ribbon like tongue and a strong muscular foot used for crawling. The shell protects their internal organs and is encased by a mantle- giving the shell its glossy shine or bumpy surface. They are found in tropical and subtropical oceans and seas worldwide.

Cowries reproduce through internal fertilization. The female lays her eggs and sits on them until they hatch, guarding them with her foot. Once the eggs develop into larvae they disperse through the water, drifting until they settle and start to grow its shell. Since the Cowrie is a live animal, it is very important to NEVER collect a live shell! It’s best to scour the sandy beaches for empty shells.
